As a kind of steel with high carbon content, heat treatment and special processing can obtain special high carbon steel with higher hardness and better wear resistance, which can be used to make a variety of mechanical tools and components, which can not be replaced by other steel; If annealed, the hardness in the annealed state will be reduced, resulting in good cutting and machinability.

Although special treatment will strengthen its strength and hardness, but when the heat treatment environment reaches a certain temperature will produce some bad effects, such as when the ambient temperature is above 200ºC, the hardness and wear resistance of carbon steel will drop sharply, and can not produce advantages and related treatment.

In addition, because carbon steel contains a high proportion of carbon elements, so its hardenability is very low, the related quenching conditions are very harsh, if the conditions are not met will occur deformation and cracking phenomenon, affecting the production and manufacturing process of steel.
